Presque Isle Electric & Gas Co-op members continue to generously assist area community, non-profit organizations and individuals through the voluntary round up of their electric and natural gas billings. Member contributions to the Communities First Fund provide funds for grants and scholarships in their local communities within the PIE&G service area.
At their recent meeting in December, the PIE&G Communities First Fund Board of Directors awarded $6,835 in grants to the following recipients:
Cheboygan County:
Cheboygan County 4-H Council ($1,500): The MSU Vet-a-Visit program provides youth who are interested in veterinary science a chance to explore the career. Workshops allow students to perform mock surgeries, cow milking, general care examinations, handle exotic snakes and lizards, observe equine demonstrations, and to learn about birds and insects and more. The $1,500 grant to the Cheboygan County 4-H Council is for the Visit-A-Vet event scheduled for April 9, 2016.
Montmorency County:
The Baby Basket (Atlanta –$4,000): The Baby Basket was established to provide needy mothers with baby clothes and supplies. In 2004, a food pantry was added. The children of Montmorency County and surrounding areas have benefited greatly from the continuing efforts of The Baby Basket. The organization received a $4,000 grant to purchase food.
Presque Isle County:
Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum (Rogers City – $1,335): The mission of the Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum is to honor the generations of men and women who made their living by sailing on the Great Lakes. The Museum is the only one of its kind on the Great Lakes. Framed picture collages highlight those individuals, along with their biographies, uniforms and personal possessions. The museum also has on display navigational and maritime tools and other artifacts about life on the Great Lakes. The grant of $1,335 is for the lighting replacement program.
